Frequently Asked Questions
What is hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a perfectly natural, safe and relaxed state, a little bit like being
absorbed in a daydream or a TV program. It is a feeling of being pleasantly
relaxed, with your mental focus turned inwards. How will you hypnotise me?
You will be asked to make yourself nice and comfortable in a chair, close your
eyes, and just listen to the sound of my voice. I will ask you to imagine
various things, visualise various things, and focus on various things.
Everything I say while guiding you into hypnosis is designed to relax you and
make you feel safe and secure.
Are there any people that can't be hypnotised?
Anybody can be hypnotised to a varying degree, depending on the
person. The only people who can’t be hypnotised are those with
severe learning difficulties, or those who are very drunk or high on
drugs.
Are any drugs or tablets used?
No.
Will I remember what has happened?
Yes. Most people are able to remember everything that has happened
during a hypnotherapy session.
Are there any causes for concern?
No. Hypnosis is a time tested and proven therapeutic tool. The state
of hypnosis could only be dangerous if you were engaged in an
activity which required your full attention at the time, ie driving,
operating machinery etc.
Can I speak whilst in hypnosis?
Yes
How many visits will I need?
Simple problems, such as
smoking,
insomnia, pre-test nerves etc usually require a 1-3 sessions and
the success rate is surprisingly high. The more deep-rooted nervous
disorders require 'analytical' rather than 'suggestion' therapy
which usually consists of 6 - 8 weekly sessions.
Can I be influenced to do anything against my will?
Certainly not. The client is in full control of themselves at all
times. This is just a myth perpetuated by stage hypnotists and
Hollywood.
What does it feel like?
Many first-time clients are surprised to find that
the hypnotic state is very normal, relaxing and even enjoyable.
